The Book List

My summer vacation officially started at 3:00 p.m. yesterday.  And so, with the metaphorical final ringing of the school bell, it is time to embark on my summer reading journey.  To begin, I give you (in no particular order) the reading list.

  • A Tale for the Time Being, Ruth Ozeki (Japan)
  • What is the What, Dave Eggers (Sudan)
  • If I Ever Get Out of Here, Eric Gansworth (Native American)
  • The Orphan Sky, Ella Leya, (Azerbaijan)
  • Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murkami (Japan)
  • What the Moon Saw, Laura Resau (Mexico)
  • The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, William Kamkwamba (Malawi)
  • The Sandcastle Girls, Chris Bohjalian (Armenia)
  • The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Diaz (Dominican Republic)
  • The Book of Unknown Americans, Cristina Henriquez (Mexico)
  • A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park (Sudan)
  • Miral, Rula Jebreal (Jerusalem)
  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie (Native American)
  • Half of a Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche (Nigeria)

I know each book is not necessarily set in the place identified - and I know I was slightly inconsistent in how I identified those "places."  That is entirely intentional.

Today, I started reading my first selection - A Tale for the Time Being.  It happens to be the first book on the above list.  That is entirely unintentional.

Stay tuned to read about my first glance into a different world.
